According to Larry, Orion’s truck was a death trap, and he refused to set one tiny foot inside it. And that is how we ended up hoofing it along the side of the highway, careful to keep to the trees, and out of sight of any drivers whizzing by. Not that there were all that many of them. The highway was largely used as a trade route, so it didn’t surprise me when we veered off to follow an exit lane and wound up in a truck stop parking lot.

Large trucks sat backed up at the pumps, their drivers milling about while they waited for their tanks to fill. A handful of other vehicles were parked in the rows in front of a large convenience store boasting a fast-food joint, in addition to the regular corner store offerings one usually found at gas station shops. Another building sat beside it with signs for the restrooms and shower facilities.

The sun was making its final dip toward the horizon, and the bright fluorescent lights buzzed overhead as we crossed the lot. Larry got a few strange looks—I think it was the gold shamrock boot buckles, mostly—but no one stared for too long, and if Larry noticed the extra eyeballs, he didn’t let on. But then, maybe he was used to it. I wasn’t sure how it worked exactly but given that I’d never seen a leprechaun living inside Winterspell’s city limits, I had to assume they preferred to live on their own, and must do their shopping elsewhere. In the human realm.

“Isn’t this kind of going against the Order?” I whispered, sidling up to Orion. “People are definitely noticing him.”

One of the Order’s primary purposes was to reinforce the border between the magic and non-magic worlds. Communities like Winterspell existed solely so magical creatures and beings had a safe place to live, where they could be themselves and not worry about the prying eyes of non-magic humans. It wasn’t against the law for magic creatures and beings to live outside the magic communities flung across the globe, but it was highly discouraged, especially for those who weren’t able to blend in with non-magic humans.

And from the double takes Larry was getting, he didn’t exactly make for a seamless fit.

Orion considered the question for a moment, lifting his dark eyes to assess the people nearest to us as we headed for the automatic doors. “I’m not sure, but I don’t think there’s much we can do to stop him at this point. I think it’s best we just keep our heads down and get in and out as quickly as we can.”

I nodded, but my anxiety spiked a little higher as the automatic glass doors swooshed open and we stepped into the even brighter light.

The store’s air was pungent with the scent of diesel and the greasy deep-fried offerings laid out under a heat lamp along one wall of the huge shop. A faint scent of old body odor wafted around as people came and went.
